The Hybrids

Devon Rex may be out crossed to American Shorthair and British Shorthair in CFA (currently the deadline is 5/1/2013). These out crosses are allowed in order to increase the gene pool.

The first generation of an ASH (or BSH) breeding to Devons produces only straight coated kittens.

        Devon Rex

        Bred together produced these kittens

These kittens are called F1 hybrids.

When a F1 hybrid is bred to a Devon for the second generation, some kittens will be straight coated hybrids (F2) and some will be curly coated Devons - the odds are pretty much 50/50.

The gene that causes the curly coat is apparently
also responsible for type. Although the beginnings of the Devon ears, body type and eyes show in the first generation, hybrids more closely resemble their ASH parent.

Hybrids do, however, have very Devon-like personalities, and seem to shed less than "regular" cats. Thus anyone who is interested in Devons because of their personality would love a hybrid.
